Propecia (finasteride)
What is Propecia (finasteride) ?
Propecia is an oral treatment used to stop or reduce the effects of male pattern hair loss on the vertex and the anterior mid-scalp area. Propecia is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co and contains the key ingredient Finasteride. It is effective in 99% of men at preventing any further hair loss, whilst 2 out of 3 men who buy Propecia will experience hair re-growth. Results can be seen in as little as 3 months with hair re-growth visible through continued use of Propecia after 6-12 months.
|
How Propecia(finasteride) works?
Propecia (finasteride) contains the active ingredient Finasteride, a type II 5-α reductase drug which inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is a hormone that forms on the scalp when testosterone and enzyme type II 5-α reductase react with each other. The produced sex hormone (DHT) is a key cause in hair loss, constricting the visible hair follicles and reducing the visibility of them. After buying Propecia (finasteride) and starting the treatment, the overall DHT levels stabilize and remain low enough such that the adverse effects of DHT on the follicles stop. This results in the reversal of the hair loss process.

What is Baldness And why does it occur ?
Baldness is a medical condition that affects some 25% of men in their 20’s and an astounding 2/3 of all men after the age of 60. Male-pattern hair loss and baldness does not have any intrinsic side effect aside from hair loss so many consider it a cosmetic medical condition, but for those who suffer from it, its effects it can be devastating with social and psychological consequences.
Male baldness treatments have been around for thousands of years. From the Ancient Egyptian remedy of pigeon droppings to the early 20th century use of electro-shock treatments on the scalp, mankind has been searching for that one elusive cure for baldness. But it wasn’t until recently that we actually knew what caused male pattern hair loss and baldness.
|
What are the remidies for Baldness?
Baldness Treatments range from the medicinal to the surgical. FDA- approved medications like Rogaine and Propecia can provide effective short-term relief from baldness and have been a popular baldness remedy for years. Rogaine is a topical solution that has proven to be one of many effective baldness treatments in that it helps follicle regrowth but works for only about 60% of all patients. Propecia, on the other hand, is very effective in stemming existing hair loss but is most powerful when used in the early stages of male-pattern hair loss and baldness. Unfortunately both medications are temporary in nature, as results cease once use of the medication has been discontinued.
Until science comes up with a baldness cure the closest we may have in baldness treatments is the hair transplant. Once the domain of artificial-looking rugs and patches of irregular clumps of hair, the transplant is now the most effective and permanent remedy for baldness. By transplanting hair follicles from healthy areas of the scalp, like the back and sides, to areas in need of help, such as the temples and the top of the scalp, procedures like Follicular Unit Transplantation can provide male pattern baldness sufferers with a powerful strategy for dealing with this pesky medical condition that, though free of other side effects, can drastically affect the quality of one’s life.

What is Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
At the hair follicle, testosterone is converted by an enzyme called 5 reductase into another form of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT, for short. DHT is the androgen hormone that triggers hair loss in androgenetic alopecia. When hair follicles that are genetically programmed to be receptive to DHT receive the DHT message over a long enough period of time, the follicle begins to produce less hair Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (Full name: 5α-Dihydrotestosterone, abbreviating to 5α-DHT; INN: androstanolone) is a biologically active metabolite of the hormone testosterone, formed primarily in the prostate gland, testes, hair follicles, and adrenal glands by the enzyme 5α-reductase by means of reducing the 4,5 double-bond. Dihydrotestosterone belongs to the class of compounds called androgens, also commonly called androgenic hormones or testoids. Androgens are part of the biology of gender by stimulating and controlling the development and maintenance of masculine characteristics. DHT is 3 times more potent than testosterone; testosterone is 5-10 times more potent than adrenal androgens.

What does Pathalogy tell bout DTH ?
DHT is the primary contributing factor in male-pattern baldness. Unlike men with male-pattern baldness, women with female-pattern baldness are characterized by increased production rates of testosterone, but not of DHT. Women with increased levels of DHT may develop certain androgynous male secondary sex characteristics, including a deepened voice and facial hair. DHT also plays a role in the development or exacerbation of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, and prostate cancer, by enlarging the prostate gland
DHT is also known to participate in the development of acne.
|
What are the Treatement for the DTH?
The drugs belonging to the group known as 5α-reductase inhibitors are used for treatment of problems stemming from DHT. This group includes finasteride (sold under the names Proscar for BPH and Propecia (finasteride) for androgenic alopecia as well as in generic formulation) and dutasteride (sold under the name Avodart). Dutasteride is three times more potent than finasteride inhibiting the type II enzyme and 100 times more potent than finasteride inhibiting the type I form of the DHT producing enzyme. Dutasteride is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of Male Pattern Hair Loss and is approved at a dose of 0.5 mg a day for the treatment of prostate enlargement.
While both the type I and type II enzymes are found in the hair follicle, there is a recent study which shows that type I is present in the human brain. The function of this enzyme in the brain is still unclear.
Currently, DHT supplementation is not used as a treatment for DHT/androgen deficiency.

How does Propecia (finasteride) relate with Pregnancy ?
Propecia (finasteride) and Pregnancy Category X
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category X is given to medicines that show problems to the fetus in animal studies or in humans who have mistakenly taken the medicine. The use of a pregnancy Category X medicine during pregnancy is not recommended. Propecia (finasteride) should not be used in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. In fact, women who are or may be pregnant should not touch broken or crushed Propecia (finasteride) tablets.
Propecia (finasteride), Pregnancy, and Birth Defects : Propecia (finasteride) works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), thereby decreasing the amount of DHT in the body. Since DHT is important for male genital development, if it taken during pregnancy,
Propecia (finasteride) may cause abnormalities to the external genitals of a male fetus.

Can Propecia (finasteride) Be Used by My Partner While I Am Pregnant?
It appears that when Propecia (finasteride) is used by the male partner during pregnancy, no problems with the fetus will occur. This is based on data that looked at doses up to 250 times the amount of Propecia (finasteride) found in semen. These studies were conducted with monkeys, a species that closely resembles humans when looking at fetal development. As discussed above, however, if your partner is using Propecia (finasteride), it is extremely important that you do not touch any broken or crushed Propecia (finasteride) tablets. Unbroken tablets are safe to touch because they have a protective coating.
